Beant Singh Assassination: Supreme Court adjourns petition of death-row prisoner Balwant Singh Rajoana by two weeks

Rajoana has demanded in the petition to convert the death sentence into life imprisonment.

New Delhi: Today (Monday) the hearing in the Supreme Court on the petition filed by Balwant Singh Rajoana, the assassin of former Punjab CM Beant Singh, has been postponed for two weeks. Now the case will be heard on November 18.

During this time the reply has to be filed by the Central Government. Rajoana has demanded in the petition to convert the death sentence into life imprisonment. Rajoana has argued in his petition that the Government of India has delayed a lot in deciding on his mercy petition. He has been in jail for about 28 years.

Balwant Singh Rajoana’s lawyer Mukul Rohatgi said that Rajoana’s mercy petition has been pending for 12 years. On this, the Solicitor General had said that he would file his reply. After this, the hearing was postponed. While hearing the case last year, the Supreme Court had refused to pardon Rajoana’s death sentence.

The court had left the task of considering the mercy petition to the officer before the Central Government. He has argued in his petition that even after the court’s order, the competent authority has not taken the necessary decision on his mercy petition. That order has not been implemented yet.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh was murdered on 31 August 1995. According to Balwant Singh Rajoana’s statement, he and Punjab Police employee Dilawar Singh had killed Beant Singh with a human bomb. Dilawar Singh had attacked Beant Singh by becoming a human bomb. The conspiracy was hatched in such a way that if Dilawar failed, Rajoana was to attack. The court had sentenced Rajoana to death.

Rajoana, former Punjab Police constable, filed the plea in the apex court over the delay in deciding his mercy petition by the government. He has been in jail for around 29 years
