Nadia (West Bengal): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached out on Friday to the grieving family of Havaldar Jhantu Ali Sheikh, a soldier from the 6 Para army special forces, who was killed in a militant attack on April 24 in Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir. Sheikh was killed during an encounter with terrorists that left two of his colleagues critically injured in the Dudu-Basantgarh area.

Around 1 PM yesterday, the Chief Minister called Nazim Sheikh, Jhantu Ali Sheikh’s cousin, and spoke with him for about 12 minutes, offering her heartfelt condolences and assuring the family of her full support. She encouraged Nazim to contact her “whenever you need,” providing a direct line of communication during their time of grief.

The encounter in Udhampur district began based on specific intelligence, leading to a joint operation with Jammu and Kashmir. “Contact was established, and a fierce firefight ensued. One of our Bravehearts sustained serious injuries in the initial exchange and later succumbed despite the best medical efforts,” the White Knight Corps of the Indian Army stated on X.

Meanwhile, security forces initiated a search operation in the Bandipora district of the Union Territory, particularly in the Kulnar Bazipora area, according to official sources. Earlier, on April 23, during Operation Tikka in Baramulla, security forces engaged in heavy exchanges with terrorists, eliminating two and foiling an infiltration attempt, alongside recovering a large cache of weapons and ammunition.

Additionally, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi arrived in Srinagar today to evaluate the security situation in the region following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. Defence officials indicated that the Army Chief plans to meet with senior Army commanders and representatives from other security agencies to review ongoing security conditions and the Pakistan Army’s violations of the ceasefire along the Line of Control.

The Indian Army is currently on high alert, conducting numerous search operations to neutralize terrorists following the deadly Pahalgam attack, which resulted in 26 casualties. This incident has sparked nationwide outrage, leading to widespread protests across the country demanding stricter actions against Pakistan in response to the attack.
