New Delhi: In a speech marking the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency in the Congress, senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the Bharat Jodo Yatra and Nyay Yatra have played a crucial role in countering the BJP-RSS’s attempts to amend the Constitution. Speaking at the Congress Working Committee meeting in Belagavi, Karnataka, Kharge expressed concerns over the BJP’s perceived agenda to alter the Constitution, especially following the construction of the new Parliament building.

He criticized the ruling party for its historical opposition to key constitutional figures and values, claiming they have disrespected the Constitution and institutions like the Election Commission. Kharge emphasized the need to protect these institutions and reaffirmed the Congress’s commitment to Gandhi’s principles throughout its 140-year history.

Kharge condemned recent remarks made by the Home Minister about B.R. Ambedkar, highlighting the Congress’s protests and the government’s refusal to acknowledge any wrongdoing. He expressed frustration over the government’s lack of accountability and the erosion of trust in the electoral process due to perceived biases in the Election Commission.

He also addressed ongoing farmer protests and the government’s indifference to their demands, contrasting current conditions with more supportive past administrations. Kharge called for renewed efforts to address public concerns and pledged to strengthen the Congress organization in preparation for future elections.

Lastly, he defended the Congress’s legacy in honoring Ambedkar, countering BJP accusations of disrespect, and reaffirmed his pride in representing Karnataka, a state he described as embodying Gandhi’s values and democratic ideals.
