Ahmedabad: Following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171 near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which struck a hostel housing medical students, BJ Medical College (BJMC) has decided to cancel all ongoing and upcoming internal MBBS exams. The college has also discontinued the summer vacation for all medical faculty and doctors, urging them to focus on caring for the injured.
The measure impacts over 500 students, especially those in their first and second years, many of whom resided in the building that was hit by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Over 200 students, including residents, have left their hostels and returned home due to trauma and fear. College sources reveal that at least 40 students present during the accident remain deeply shocked and distressed.
The exams will be rescheduled once the students have recovered mentally and emotionally. A senior official confirmed that, given the current psychological state of the students and the damage to the hostel building, all theory and practical assessments are postponed until further notice. The mess-cum-hostel, located on the first and second floors, was directly struck by the aircraft’s wing, leaving residents without access to meals and basic amenities.
Additionally, the college has called off the scheduled summer break for medical staff, who are now expected to report for duty from June 14 to meet the urgent medical needs of the injured at Civil Hospital, where BJMC doctors are actively involved in treatment.
Meanwhile, Delhi-based leader Rishabh Rupani, son of Vijay Rupani, returned from the US to Gandhinagar on Saturday, while his wife, Anjali Rupani, arrived from London via a chartered flight last Friday. Prominent BJP leaders, including Health Minister Rushikesh Patel and Union Minister Parshottam Rupala, along with other party members and family, have gathered at Rupani’s Gandhinagar residence to offer condolences. The last rites for Vijay Rupani are expected to be held in his hometown of Rajkot.
