New Delhi: AIMIM leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has vehemently criticized the recent demolition drive in Dwarka, Gujarat, asserting that it specifically targeted Muslim places of worship and cemeteries.

In a post on X, Owaisi highlighted that the sites, including dargahs and burial grounds, were officially recognized in government records, and the demolitions took place in disregard of Supreme Court directives. He stated, “The demolitions in Dwarka, Gujarat were aimed at Muslims and their places of worship and cemeteries. They blatantly violated Supreme Court orders. The demolished burial sites and dargah were acknowledged as such in government records. The government did not contest their status, and these demolitions occurred without adhering to the principles of natural justice. This is utterly condemnable. The demolitions also illustrate the Modi government’s intent to amend the Waqf Bill, aiming to undermine protections for Waqf.”

Between January 18 and 25, numerous encroachments were cleared in various regions of Devbhoomi Dwarka district, affecting three religious sites. The Gujarat High Court is set to hear a petition from the Waqf Board on February 4 concerning the extensive demolition drive that transpired over several days.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi also addressed the demolition initiative on X, stating, “DevBhoomi Dwarka! The seven islands of Dwarka district are NOW 100% encroachment-free! A total of 36 illegal structures have been successfully removed from the seven islands. Kudos to the Administration and team for their dedication and commitment to preserving our cultural heritage!”

The structures that were demolished are believed to have been constructed illegally over the past five to ten years on certain islands, which require prior permission from relevant authorities for visitation.
