Ahmedabad, June 12: Air India’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane has crashed in Ahmedabad. All 242 people on board have died. News agency AP gave this information quoting the Gujarat Police Commissioner.
Air India flight number AI-171 was going from Ahmedabad to London. There were a total of 230 passengers on board, including 169 Indians, 53 British, 7 Portuguese and a Canadian citizen. The rest were 12 crew members.
Most of the bodies found at the accident site are so badly burned that it is extremely difficult to identify them. Their identification will be possible only after a DNA test.
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also died in the accident. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani gave this information on X. However, after some time, he deleted his post.
The building the plane collided with houses doctors from Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital. According to information, 50 to 60 doctors were present in the building at the time of the accident, out of which more than 15 have been injured.
Air India flight number AI-171 took off at 1:38 pm. It crashed at 1:40 pm.
According to the information, the plane crashed near the airport wall and the Air Custom Cargo Office. As soon as the plane fell, a cloud of smoke was seen in the entire area.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, registered VT-ANB and operating a scheduled service to London’s Gatwick, crashed just outside the airport perimeter minutes after departure.
According to information, the DGCA officials are on site collecting flight data, voice recordings, and witness accounts as part of the investigation. Sources said that Boeing representatives and officials are also expected to assist the ground staff. This is one of the most serious aviation incidents in India in recent years involving a wide-body aircraft. Authorities have not yet released information about casualties or survivors.
While speculation around the cause ranges from possible engine failure to flight control malfunction, officials have urged restraint until official findings emerge. The crash has sent shockwaves through the aviation community and raised urgent questions about aircraft safety and maintenance protocols.
Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the CM of Gujarat
After the accident, Home Minister Shah spoke to Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel and inquired about the accident.
1) The flight departed from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
2) Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals.
3) PM Modi spoke to HM Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. He has asked them to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance.
4) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA), Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice.
Air India sets up emergency response centre after plane crash
In the wake of the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 on Thursday, shortly after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport with 242 people on board, the Tata Group airline has activated an emergency response centre and deployed dedicated support teams to assist the affected families.
Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said: “At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted.” Confirming that Air India flight AI 171 operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today, he said: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event.”
“Further updates will be shared as we receive more verified information. An emergency centre has been activated and support team have been set up for families seeking information,” Chandrasekaran said.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner (VT-ANB) had just taken off with 242 people on board, including two pilots and 10 cabin crew, when it crashed just outside the perimeter of Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Ahmedabad airport officials said that all flight operations remain temporarily suspended until further notice. An SVPIA spokesperson said that “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently not operational”.
“All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport,” said the spokesperson. “We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation. Further updates will be provided as soon as available,” said the spokesperson.
Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, who was in Vijayawada attending the first anniversary events of the NDA government, rushed to Ahmedabad immediately upon receiving news of the flight crash. “Treating the incident with utmost urgency, the Minister cut short his engagements and is now en route to personally oversee the situation on the ground. He is in constant contact with senior officials from DGCA, AAI, NDRF, and the Gujarat State administration to ensure swift, coordinated response and support,” according to a Ministry statement.
“Rescue and medical teams are on site. Passenger safety and emergency response remain the highest priorities. Further updates will be shared by the Ministry as the situation develops,” it added.
