Kolkata: The Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended two smugglers and recovered nearly 1.11 crore worth of 10 gold biscuits along the Indo-Bangladesh border in North 24-Parganas district, West Bengal, on Friday, stated N K Pandey, DIG and spokesperson of the South Bengal Frontier, BSF.
According to Pandey, the Hakimpur Border Outpost received specific intelligence about a gold smuggling attempt. Acting swiftly on this information, BSF personnel launched a strategic operation. All personnel at the Hakimpur check post were put on high alert, and surveillance was intensified across key routes and sensitive areas.
At around 10:30 am, BSF personnel observed suspicious movement near Hakimpur Uttarpara village. After stopping and questioning the two individuals, a detailed search uncovered 10 gold biscuits in their possession. The smugglers were detained and taken to the Hakimpur BOP for interrogation. They admitted they were residents of Hakimpur Uttarpara and were to deliver the gold to another local resident in exchange for Rs 2,800. The total weight of the seized gold was approximately 1.167 kilograms, with an estimated market value of Rs 1.11 crore.
On the same day, BSF units in Nadia and North 24-Parganas districts seized 41 kilograms of ganja, intercepted while smugglers were attempting to move the contraband from India into Bangladesh.
The seized gold and ganja have been handed over to the relevant authorities. Pandey emphasized the BSF’s commitment and capability to curb illegal activities along the border and urged residents to share any information related to gold smuggling via the Seema Sathi helpline (14419) or WhatsApp (9903472227). Credible tips will be rewarded, and informants’ identities will be protected.
