Bhubaneswar (Odisha): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Chintan Raghuvanshi, Deputy Director of the Enforcement Directorate (IRS), in Bhubaneswar on charges of corruption. According to sources, Raghuvanshi was caught red-handed accepting an initial bribe of Rs 20 lakh. The CBI had set a trap based on a complaint and apprehended him at the scene.
Investigation revealed that the bribe was part of a larger amount initially demanded at Rs 5 crore, which was later negotiated down to Rs 2 crore. The illegal payment was allegedly in exchange for ‘settling’ a case related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The agency also disclosed that the bribe money was routed through Raghuvanshi’s brother, and further inquiries are ongoing.
In a separate case, Odisha Vigilance officials intercepted Assistant Executive Engineer Pabitra Mohan Panigrahi of Chitrakonda Block in Malkangiri district, seizing over Rs 15 lakh suspected to be ill-gotten wealth. Based on credible intelligence about his involvement in accepting bribes from contractors, officials stopped Panigrahi near Gobindapally Chowk while he was traveling from his government residence in Chitrakonda to Bhubaneswar in a WagonR with registration OD-30-E-3096, where he was reportedly taking a lift.
During the interception, officials recovered Rs 5.07 lakh in cash from Panigrahi. A subsequent search at his government quarters in Chitrakonda yielded an additional Rs 10 lakh. Since Panigrahi was unable to satisfactorily explain the source of the funds, the entire amount was confiscated. Searches are also ongoing at two other locations linked to him, focusing on disproportionate assets, and Panigrahi is currently being questioned to determine the origin of the cash. The investigation continues, with a detailed report awaited.
