Mumbai: In a significant operation against gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mumbai arrested a Chadian national upon arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) from Addis Ababa, after recovering 4,015 grams of gold valued at Rs 3.86 crore hidden inside his slippers.
Following credible intelligence, DRI officers screened the passenger shortly after he landed. During a personal search, they found multiple gold bars of foreign origin concealed within the modified heels of his slippers.
In his voluntary statement, the accused admitted to hiding the gold in this unconventional way to evade customs inspection and avoid detection. The gold was confiscated under the Customs Act, 1962, and the individual was taken into custody.
Authorities are now investigating to determine the source of the gold, its intended recipients, and whether this case is connected to a larger smuggling network.
This operation is part of an ongoing effort by DRI to combat gold smuggling attempts. Earlier, in April 2025, the agency seized Rs 6.30 crore worth of foreign-origin gold hidden in a traveler’s luggage at CSMIA after arriving from Bangkok, and the passenger was swiftly arrested.
DRI continues to employ intelligence and surveillance at international entry points to prevent the smuggling of valuable commodities and contraband, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding national border security and economic stability.
