New Delhi: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has sparked a political controversy after sharing a video on YouTube in which he referred to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a “traitor.”

The remarks have triggered strong reactions from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, with party leaders condemning Kamra’s comments.

Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC criticized the comedian, stating, “Calling Maharashtra’s most popular Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister traitors and labeling it as comedy is nothing but vulgarity. What happens next will be a tragedy for him.”

BJP MLA Ram Kadam also denounced Kamra, accusing him of seeking attention through controversy. “Kunal Kamra has crossed all limits in his quest for cheap publicity. He makes obscene remarks about top leaders and journalists without any restraint. The Maharashtra government will now take the strictest action against him wherever he is found,” he warned.

Earlier, Shiv Sena workers stormed and vandalized the venue of Kamra’s scheduled performance at Mumbai’s Habitat studio. Following the incident, the police called the involved party workers for questioning.

During his show, Kamra mocked Eknath Shinde by altering the lyrics of a popular song from Dil To Pagal Hai, saying, “Meri nazar se tum dekho to gaddar nazar wo aaye. Haaye.” He also referenced Shinde’s 2022 rebellion, which led to the split of the Shiv Sena into two factions—one led by Shinde and the other by Uddhav Thackeray.

Shiv Sena legislator Murji Patel has filed a complaint against Kamra at the MIDC police station in Andheri under sections 353(1)(b), 353(2), and 356(2) of the Indian Penal Code.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also criticized the comedian, urging restraint in public discourse. “Everyone has the right to express their views, but no one should exceed legal and constitutional limits. Differences of opinion exist, but one must ensure their statements do not force the police to intervene,” he stated.
