Chennai: The Greater Chennai Police successfully prevented an ATM break-in early Monday morning at an SBI ATM on Thiruvalluvar Salai, arresting three suspects—four suspects—who are migrant workers. The accused, identified as Kuldeep Singh, Smith Yadav, and Bridge Pan, attempted to disable the ATM’s AI-based security by using a black cardboard sheet to block the surveillance camera, hoping to access the cash vault undetected.

However, the ATM’s security system detected the suspicious activity and triggered an alert, which was promptly sent to the Chennai Police control room. Responding swiftly, a police patrol apprehended the trio before they could cause damage or escape. The suspects’ use of a premeditated distraction technique indicates familiarity with ATM security protocols, prompting investigators to probe whether they are part of a larger interstate gang involved in similar thefts.

Police are now examining their mobile phones, travel history, and possible links to other criminal networks across the country. Meanwhile, SBI officials are assessing whether the security was compromised or if any data or money was accessed. Preliminary reports suggest the suspects did not succeed in opening the cash vault. An FIR has been registered under relevant IPC sections, and further investigations are ongoing.
