Raipur: Maoists in Chhattisgarh have carried out a deadly attack in Sukma district by detonating an IED, resulting in the death of Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Giripunje of Konta Division. State Home Minister Vijay Sharma confirmed Giripunje’s death, praising him as a brave officer from the 2013 batch. Several other security personnel on patrol were injured, including Konta Town Inspector Sonal Gwala, who sustained injuries. Security forces have been deployed to secure the area and provide reinforcement.
Giripunje was critically wounded after the blast near Dondra while leading a foot patrol along the Konta-Errabor road following the setup of a security camp. The bomb exploded before the troops could complete their patrol, causing multiple injuries, and the wounded officers are currently receiving treatment at Konta Hospital.
Deep-embedded IEDs are a constant threat to security forces operating in insurgency-affected regions. Past incidents, such as a 2015 attack in Bijapur where an IED buried five feet underground caused eight soldier deaths, highlight the challenge of detecting such explosives. Despite protocols requiring thorough sweeps before troop movements and bomb disposal efforts, deeply buried IEDs continue to pose serious dangers.
Historically, Maoist-linked IED attacks have resulted in significant casualties. Notable incidents include the deaths of nine soldiers in a 2025 explosion, eleven in a 2022 attack, five fatalities in a 2021 bus bombing, five in a 2019 attack on a legislator’s vehicle, and another five in a 2018 explosion. Reinforcements have been dispatched to prevent further violence following this recent incident, emphasizing the urgent need for better detection technology and enhanced safety measures for security personnel.
