New Delhi: Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday for a five-day State Visit to India, where he was warmly welcomed by Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita and received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the airport.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced his arrival with a message, “Bienvenido, President Gabriel Boric! President Boric of Chile has landed in New Delhi on his first State Visit to India, where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour.”
Accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes ministers, parliament members, senior officials, business representatives, media personnel, and prominent Chilean figures involved in cultural exchanges with India, Boric’s itinerary includes visits to Agra, Mumbai, and Bengaluru before he departs on April 5.
Upon his arrival, the Chilean President posted on X, “6:30 a.m. in New Delhi, and from here we begin this State Visit to India, a momentous occasion for strengthening and diversifying our economic, political, and cultural relations at a time when multilateral cooperation is more necessary than ever. We are talking about the fifth-largest economy and the most populous country on the planet, with whom we share common ground and opportunities for growth in key areas such as agribusiness, innovation, and the creative industries.”
He emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties, stating, “We’re here to bolster our connections, accompanied by government officials, members of the National Congress, business leaders, innovators, distinguished professors, and students. It’s going to be a busy schedule, and I’ll keep you updated!”
On April 1, he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for comprehensive discussions covering the full range of India-Chile relations. PM Modi will also host a special luncheon in Boric’s honor.
Additionally, the Chilean President will have meetings with Indian President Droupadi Murmu for further discussions, followed by a banquet in his honor.
During his time in Mumbai and Bengaluru, Boric will engage with political figures, industry leaders, startup entrepreneurs, and technology innovators, aiming to foster collaborations between the two countries across various sectors.
The MEA emphasized that this State Visit is an important opportunity to evaluate bilateral ties and discuss regional and global issues of mutual interest. “India-Chile relations have traditionally been characterized by warmth, friendship, and a commonality of views on a wide range of issues. Both countries cooperate extensively in multilateral forums and share similar perspectives on climate change, renewable energy, and the expansion and reform of the UNSC,” the MEA stated.
Chile has consistently supported India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UNSC, as reiterated in a joint statement following an official visit by the Chilean Foreign Minister to India in April 2003. Chile shares India’s concerns regarding international terrorism and has condemned terrorism in all its forms.
Recently, a parliamentary delegation led by BJP Lok Sabha MP Jagdambika Pal visited Chile from January 11-15, where they participated in the Summit meeting at the Congreso Futuro and the Third World Summit of the Committees of the Future, engaging in extensive discussions with Chilean parliamentarians on a variety of topics.
