Sukma [Chhattisgarh]: The CRPF held the funeral of Rolo, a two-year-old Belgian Shepherd and a vital member of their elite canine unit. Rolo passed away after being attacked by a swarm of bees during a major anti-Naxal operation in the Karreguttalu hills on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. The dog died on April 27, 2025, due to anaphylactic shock caused by about 200 bee stings.

Born on April 5, 2023, Rolo was specially trained in infantry patrols, explosive detection, and assault techniques at DBTS in batch SL No. 80. It was deployed for anti-Naxal duties within the 228 Bn, CRPF, starting April 2024.

During a search operation at KGH, Rolo and other troops were unexpectedly attacked by a large swarm of honey bees. Despite handlers covering Rolo with a polythene sheet to protect it, the bees slipped inside and stung Rolo multiple times. The dog was overwhelmed with pain and agitation, broke free from the cover, and suffered around 200 bee stings, leading to unconsciousness. Immediate medical aid was provided in transit, but unfortunately, Rolo succumbed to the injuries while being evacuated, and the veterinarian declared her dead.

The operation, named ‘Operation Black Forest,’ was part of a larger effort to eliminate Naxalism by March 2026. The 21-day mission, conducted between April 21 and May 11 by combined CRPF and state police forces, resulted in the neutralization of 31 Naxals with a bounty of Rs 1.72 crore, aiming to weaken the Naxal network near Karreguttalu Hill.
