The death toll from the hooch tragedy in Bihar’s Siwan and Saran districts has reached 24, as reported by Bihar’s Director General of Police, Alok Raj, on Thursday. Of these fatalities, 20 occurred in Siwan and four in Saran after individuals ingested counterfeit liquor on Tuesday evening.
Alok Raj indicated that these deaths were directly associated with the spurious alcohol, stressing that the Bihar police are addressing the situation with great seriousness. He pledged that strict action would be taken against those responsible and that efforts are underway to combat the risks posed by illegal alcohol in the impacted areas.
Following the incidents, the Superintendents of Police from both districts, along with the Deputy Inspector General of Police from the Saran range, conducted inspections in the affected locales and questioned suspects, leading to several detentions. So far, ten individuals have been arrested in connection with the illegal liquor supply, and they are currently being interrogated. During these interrogations, the suspects revealed names of the liquor mafias involved in the distribution chain, prompting authorities to plan decisive actions against those accountable.
Officials from the Liquor Prohibition Department have been dispatched to the affected regions, tasked with profiling areas to trace the supply routes of illicit liquor and identify the responsible liquor mafias. In Siwan, the incident took place in Maghar Kodia Panchayat, and the local police have filed an FIR while actively investigating. Likewise, in Saran, an FIR was lodged at the Mashrakh police station following an incident in Brahimpur village. Investigations are ongoing as authorities strive to dismantle the illegal alcohol trade and avert further tragedies.
