The BJP’s Delhi spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawala, visited the Yamuna River on Saturday to draw attention to the escalating pollution crisis in the capital as Chhath Puja approaches. He criticized Arvind Kejriwal for his ten-year tenure’s failure to effectively tackle the environmental issues and called for voters to reject him in the upcoming elections by saying “No to Kejriwal.”
Poonawala highlighted the unfulfilled commitment to clean the Yamuna by 2025, claiming that instead of becoming safe for consumption, the river has become polluted. He accused the AAP government of wasting ₹7,000 crore on corrupt practices without making any real progress in cleaning the river, calling it disrespectful both to the Yamuna and to Sanatan Dharma.
He further condemned the pollution levels in the city, stating, “Delhi has turned into a gas chamber,” noting that pollution levels have risen above 350 AQI, forcing residents to wear masks. He criticized Kejriwal for shifting the blame to Punjab’s stubble burning while ignoring significant local issues such as vehicle emissions, road dust, and construction pollution over the last decade.
As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, Delhi’s average AQI reached 293 by Friday morning. In the surrounding NCR areas, air quality was also poor with Faridabad at 194, Gurugram at 196, Ghaziabad at 247, Greater Noida at 296, and Noida at 242. Many regions in Delhi reported AQI levels between 300 and 400, with particularly high readings in Wazirpur (379), Vivek Vihar (327), and others, highlighting the severity of the pollution crisis.
