New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved a scheme providing Rs 2,500 per month in financial assistance to eligible women, fulfilling a key promise made during the BJP’s Assembly election campaign. The scheme, which was approved during a Cabinet meeting, is expected to benefit 15-20 lakh women aged 18-60 from families with an annual income of up to Rs 3 lakh, with a special focus on Below Poverty Line (BPL) households.
To qualify for the assistance, beneficiaries must be Delhi residents for the past five years and have a bank account linked to an Aadhaar number. Registration for the scheme will be available online, with a multi-level verification process to ensure that only legitimate beneficiaries receive the assistance, similar to the Union government’s Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
In a dialogue with women at the Delhi Assembly earlier this week, CM Gupta discussed the financial assistance scheme, as well as other issues like security, sanitation, education, and women’s participation in governance. She reaffirmed the BJP government’s commitment to providing the monthly Rs 2,500 to women and criticized the AAP for attempting to influence the scheme’s timeline.
Suggestions from women will be considered in the upcoming Delhi Budget for 2025-26, which will be presented from March 24-26. Additionally, CM Gupta launched a WhatsApp number (9999962025) to gather public ideas for the Budget, marking the first time a BJP government in Delhi has engaged in such a crowdsourcing effort in 27 years.
BJP National General Secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam also criticized AAP leaders for questioning the BJP’s dedication to the scheme and challenged them to fulfill their own promise to provide monthly financial assistance to women in Punjab, which has been pending for three years.
