New Delhi: A 23-year-old man was arrested at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport for impersonating a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector, police officials announced on Wednesday. The individual, identified as Sahil Kumar, had forged documents to falsely present himself as a police officer, thereby misleading women and his social acquaintances.
Police recovered several counterfeit items from his possession, including a fake Delhi Police ID card labeled as PSI, a forged appointment letter, a handbag containing blank case diaries, a blank page with Delhi Police Academy (DPA) stamp marks, and a mobile phone with pictures of him dressed in a Delhi Police uniform.
On Monday, during routine security checks and profiling at the departure area of Terminal 3, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) vigilance team intercepted and detained Kumar. When questioned, he was unable to give a convincing explanation about his alleged current posting in the Delhi Police and provided vague, unsubstantiated reasons. His possession of a seemingly forged Delhi Police ID card further raised suspicions, leading to a formal complaint lodged by CISF personnel and registration of a case by Delhi police, which has since begun an investigation.
During interrogation, Kumar revealed that he had studied up to 12th standard and currently lived with a relative in Rohini, Delhi. He admitted that he impersonated a Sub-Inspector to deceive several women, including Delhi Police staff members, with whom he had contacted via social media. He traveled to the airport to meet one of these women.
A female Delhi Police employee confirmed that Kumar had contacted her through social media, claiming to be a 2024-batch Sub-Inspector posted at IGI Airport. Kumar further confessed that he fabricated his identity to impress and mislead his acquaintances and social circle, believing he had been appointed as a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector. He clarified that he is actually a student preparing for competitive exams and does not hold any official government employment.
He also disclosed that he had purchased a Delhi Police uniform from the Camp area in Delhi and had created a fake identity card and appointment letter using his own self-taught skills in Photoshop.
