New Delhi: The Delhi Police arrested 24 Bangladeshi nationals in South East and South Delhi during an operation on Wednesday for illegally residing in India. Several documents were recovered during the operation.
Thirteen individuals were detained in the South District for living without proper documentation, while eleven others were arrested in the South East District. Police are also in the process of verifying documents for over 10 individuals from these areas.
Earlier, five Bangladeshis were arrested from various parts of the city for staying illegally. Two were detained from the Sadar Bazar area, and the remaining three were apprehended in the outer districts. According to the police, these individuals had fabricated documents.
The operation is ongoing, and the authorities are continuing their efforts to address the issue of illegal immigrants.
In a similar initiative, the Delhi Police had conducted a verification drive on March 8 at Jai Hindi Camp in Vasant Kunj. Sub-Inspector Ravi Malik explained that the police ask residents for their identity proofs during the process, and any suspicious individuals have their details sent to their home districts for further verification.
This crackdown follows a directive from Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in January, instructing the police to launch a special mission to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the city. During a meeting with top officials, it was decided to step up efforts to detect and deport those staying unlawfully in Delhi. The initiative also includes a public outreach program to raise awareness about verifying the identity of employees and workers, particularly domestic help and construction labor, to ensure security.
