New Delhi: Following the tragic incident that resulted in 18 fatalities, including five children, the Delhi Police have stationed six inspector-rank officers at the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) to improve crowd management and ensure passenger safety. These officers, selected from various districts, are experienced in handling operations at NDLS, which is one of the busiest transit locations in India. Several of them have previously served as Station House Officers (SHOs) at the station, providing them with valuable insights into the logistical and security challenges associated with large crowds.

With the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage increasing the number of travelers, authorities expect this surge to continue in the days to come. The officers’ deployment is part of a strategy to manage crowd flow and prevent any further incidents, especially as the final major ritual of the Kumbh is set for February 26, coinciding with Maha Shivratri.

The stampede on Saturday night occurred on the foot-overbridge between platform numbers 14 and 15, triggered by a sudden rush of passengers heading to trains for Prayagraj, resulting in a tragic crush as some passengers lost their footing while descending.

In response, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has initiated an inquiry and established a two-member high-level committee to investigate any lapses. Following the stampede at NDLS, other railway stations across the country are also adopting emergency protocols.

Meanwhile, in Prayagraj, devotees continue to arrive at the Triveni Sangam for the sacred dip. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reported that approximately 1.49 crore devotees participated in the holy dip at the Sangam on Sunday.
