New Delhi: Following the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, most of the deceased brought to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital exhibited injuries primarily to their chest and abdomen, with asphyxia likely being the cause of death, according to hospital sources. Dr. Ajay Shukla, the Medical Superintendent, reported that the hospital received five bodies: one male aged 25 and four females—three in their thirties and one aged 70. Four of these bodies have been returned to their families.
At the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital (LNJP), it was noted that many of the injured from the stampede sustained injuries to their lower limbs, while others had bone injuries. The injured patients admitted to LNJP have been discharged after receiving initial treatment, with a team of 15 doctors currently attending to those still hospitalized.
The stampede, which occurred around 10 PM on Saturday, resulted in 18 fatalities as a large number of devotees were heading to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival, leading to severe overcrowding at the station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railway, KPS Malhotra, reported that the incident took place on platform 14, where the Prayagraj Express was located. Delays in the departures of the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani further exacerbated congestion on platforms 12, 13, and 14.
Eyewitnesses described the chaos, noting that the crowd surged from both directions after an announcement about a platform change, resulting in the stampede. One witness stated, “There was no one to control the crowd… The announcement changed the train’s platform, and the crowd rushed from both sides.” Another witness expressed concern over the overwhelming size of the crowd, stating that even with the presence of administration and NDRF personnel, it became impossible to manage once the crowd exceeded safe limits.
In response to the tragedy, Indian Railways announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives, Rs 2.5 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries.
