Srinagar: In Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, police apprehended a drug peddler on Monday and recovered narcotics from his possession. The crackdown comes as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and its detrimental effects on society, according to an official police statement.
During a routine checkpoint operation at Geerhatchi, a police team from Bazar post, under senior officers’ supervision, established a traffic stop. When a suspicious individual approached from Zangli and tried to evade the check, the alert officers quickly detained him. The suspect, identified as Faisal Ahmad Sheikh of Kupwara, was found to be carrying a heroin-like substance after a search.
Initial investigations indicated that Faisal was actively involved in supplying and distributing drugs, particularly targeting youth in Kupwara town and the Hyhama area, contributing to the increasing drug abuse problem in the region.
A case has been registered at Police Station Kupwara under FIR No. 149/2025, sections 8/21 of the NDPS Act, and a detailed probe has been launched to uncover the larger network involved in these illegal activities.
The arrest is seen as a significant step forward in addressing drug abuse concerns among local families. Kupwara Police reaffirmed its strict stance against drug trafficking and emphasized their ongoing commitment to eradicate the menace from the region.
It is noted that Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with security agencies, are intensifying their crackdown on drug traffickers, especially those linked to cross-border smuggling from Pakistan. Authorities believe that proceeds from drug operations and hawala transactions are often used to fund terrorism activities in the area.
