Aizawl: In a joint operation By the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police, authorities have confiscated heroin and highly addictive methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 7.64 crore, arresting a drug smuggler in the process, officials reported on Wednesday.
According to a Defence spokesperson, the operation took place in Zokhawthar, located in the Champhai district, where authorities apprehended a drug dealer known as Lalruatzauva (34), a resident of the district near the Myanmar border. The operation resulted in the recovery of 2.276 kg of heroin and methamphetamine tablets on Tuesday night.
The arrested individual and the seized drugs have been handed over to the Zokhawthar Police Department for further investigation and legal action. A police official indicated that the narcotics were smuggled in from Myanmar.
“Smuggling of illegal items remains a significant concern for Mizoram and India. The Assam Rifles are intensifying their operations to combat smuggling and to apprehend major traffickers,” stated an official report.
This seizure follows another major bust on January 24, when the Assam Rifles and officials from the Excise and Narcotics Department confiscated heroin worth Rs 35.51 crore in the same Champhai district and arrested two individuals.
Mizoram shares a 510 km-long unfenced border with Myanmar’s Chin state, and six districts—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip—are hotspots for the trafficking of drugs, arms, and other contraband. The northeastern states of India share a total of 1,643 km of unfenced borders with Myanmar, which has facilitated the smuggling of various drugs, particularly heroin and methamphetamine.
