Damoh (Madhya Pradesh): Authorities in Madhya Pradesh are investigating claims that a fake doctor performed heart surgeries in a private missionary hospital in Damoh, leading to at least seven deaths.

Concerns arose when reports of seven deaths within a month emerged, prompting scrutiny of N John Kem, who allegedly impersonated a well-known British cardiologist with the same name while working at the Christian missionary hospital. Patients who underwent surgery reportedly died afterward, officials stated.

Further investigation revealed that the accused’s real name is Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav. Deepak Tiwari, an advocate and the district president of the Child Welfare Committee, asserted that the official death toll is likely much higher than seven. After filing a complaint with the Damoh District Magistrate, Tiwari recounted: “Some patients who survived approached us. They took their father to the hospital, where the fake doctor was ready to operate. However, they became apprehensive and chose to take their father to Jabalpur. We later learned that this impersonator was operating in the hospital while the real doctor is in Britain and that Yadav has faced legal issues in Hyderabad.”

Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission, noted that the missionary hospital had been receiving government funds under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. He mentioned, “We received a complaint about a fake doctor performing surgeries. Since the hospital is linked to the Ayushman Bharat scheme, receiving government funding, this is a serious concern. We are currently investigating this matter.”

In response to the allegations, the district investigative team seized all relevant documents from the hospital. Investigations revealed that the impersonator had submitted fake credentials similar to those of the actual British doctor. The accused is also linked to previous controversies, including a criminal case filed in Hyderabad.

Damoh District Collector Sudhir Kochar stated that he would provide a statement once the investigation is complete. Damoh SP Abhishek Tiwari confirmed, “We are investigating the matter concerning multiple deaths in the missionary hospital.”

The impersonator has a history of posing as the British doctor, including a controversial tweet in July 2023, in which he urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to be sent to France to address riots at the time, which drew mockery from several politicians. He had also shared allegedly photoshopped images with the UP CM under a false name.
