Kolkata: Kolkata police have uncovered vital information concerning a fake passport racket following the arrest of Dipankar Das, a contractual staff member at the Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). A database found on his devices revealed the names of approximately 30,000 individuals for whom he created counterfeit Indian identity documents, primarily forged passports.
Authorities have shared these names with local police stations to help track down the individuals. Many of those who received these fake documents are believed to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, with suspicions that some are still living in various regions of India, including West Bengal.
Das, along with another suspect named S. Biswas, operated the forgery from a small office in his home in Behala, on Kolkata’s southern outskirts. In addition to fake Indian identity documents, authorities seized counterfeit bank documents and visas for a European country during the investigation.
Since Sunday, five individuals have been arrested across West Bengal in connection with the passport forgery operation, including two members of the POPSK staff—Das and another named Deepak Mondal. Investigators suspect that some permanent employees of the Indian Postal Department may also be linked to these illicit activities, which primarily occur in villages near the international borders with Bangladesh.
