Kochi: The Kerala Police have launched an investigation into the tragic deaths of a senior IRS officer, his sister, and mother, found dead in his official residence on Thursday night.
The deceased have been identified as Manish Agarwal, an IRS officer from Jharkhand, along with his sister Shalini and their elderly mother Shakunthala. Both Manish and Shalini were unmarried, and the only clue found was a suicide note written in Hindi, indicating that their sister, who resides abroad, should be informed.
Authorities in Kerala have coordinated with the Jharkhand Police and are expecting a team of officials to arrive soon. Manish, a member of the 2011 IRS batch, held a prominent position at the GST Commissioner’s office in Kochi. Shalini had been living with her brother and mother for several months.
The bodies of Manish and Shalini were discovered hanging, while their mother was found lying on her bed. When police forced open the door, they found the mother’s body draped in a white cloth, with flowers placed around her. Investigators suspect that she may have died first, raising concerns about possible foul play.
The police are awaiting the results of the post-mortem examination to draw further conclusions. Meanwhile, there are growing questions regarding Shalini’s government position in her home state.
Since the Customs quarters are restricted to local residents, neighbors noted that only Manish’s mother was seen outside occasionally. Colleagues of Manish reported that he had taken six days of leave but did not return to work after it ended. Concerned, they visited his home on Thursday evening, detected a foul odor, and promptly notified the police, who then forced entry into the residence. The local police have registered an unnatural death case, and a forensic team has examined the scene.
