New Delhi: Farmers affiliated with the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are set to resume their ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest march today, December 8. A 101-member delegation will begin their march from the Shambhu border between Haryana and Punjab at noon. This decision comes after recent clashes at the border, where police blocked their advance towards the capital.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher reported that 16 farmers were injured during the altercations and accused the government of failing to address their concerns. In response to the anticipated protest, security has been heightened at the Shambhu border, with Haryana Police adding more barricades and advising media personnel to keep a safe distance from the protest areas.

As a precaution, internet services in Ambala have been suspended until December 9, and gatherings of more than five people have been banned by local authorities. This protest follows a similar attempt earlier this year, which was also thwarted by security forces.

The farmers have a list of demands, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), debt relief, pensions for farmers and agricultural laborers, opposition to electricity tariff increases, justice for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, and compensation for families of farmers who died during the 2020-21 protests.

Despite the increased security and restrictions, the farmers remain determined to reach Delhi to advocate for their demands, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the agricultural community and the government.
