Tumakuru: Five individuals were arrested on Saturday in connection with an incident where stones were hurled at a girls’ toilet at a government school in Huliyar, Karnataka, and a student was assaulted when he confronted the attackers.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Mehboob Sharif, Shamshuddin, Irfan, Mubaraq, Muddassir, Yasin, and Tazim, all from Huliyar city. Authorities are searching for two additional suspects.
The incident took place at the Government School in Huliyar, located in Chikkanayakanahalli taluk of Tumakuru district, on Friday. Yashwanth, a student at the school, saw the group throwing stones at the girls’ toilet and intervened, asking them to stop. Enraged, the group chased him and attacked him with sticks on the school premises.
The school’s head teacher and staff rushed to his aid, and as others gathered, the attackers fled the scene. Yashwanth sustained injuries to his back and head and was hospitalized at the government hospital in Chikkanayakanahalli.
The school management filed a complaint with the Huliyar police regarding the assault and stone-pelting incident.
Notably, Tumakuru is the hometown of Home Minister G. Parameshwara. The BJP has criticized the Congress-led Karnataka government for alleged appeasement politics, claiming that certain groups feel emboldened and unafraid of the law. Former CM and BJP MLA Basavaraja Bommai linked the increase in such incidents to a lack of fear of punishment, stressing the need for stricter penalties to curb these crimes.
