Amaravati: The families of five youths in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, faced a tragic ordeal on Wednesday as the youths drowned in the Godavari river during Maha Shivratri celebrations.

Three bodies have been recovered while the search continues for the two others. The incident took place in Tadipudi, Tallapudi mandal, when a group of 11 students, all under 20, went for a swim in the river early in the morning.

Unaware of the river’s depths, they began to drown and attempted to save one another, ultimately resulting in five of them succumbing to the water. Fortunately, six others managed to swim to safety.

Local residents alerted the police, who quickly arrived to initiate a rescue operation, enlisting the help of swimmers. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire service personnel also joined in. The bodies of three of the youths were retrieved by the NDRF team, identified as P. Durga Prasad (19), Tirumalashetti Pavan (17), and P. Sai Krishna (19). Efforts to locate the missing youths, G. Akash (19) and Anishetty Pavan (19), are ongoing.

The group of students, who were in intermediate or degree courses in Kovvur, Tallapudi, and Rajamahendravaram, had come from the same village. They chose to visit the river for a bath since their colleges were closed for Maha Shivratri, planning to head to a temple for puja afterward.

Durga Prasad’s body has been sent to a government hospital for an autopsy, and the families of the missing youths have gathered at the scene. Senior police and revenue officials, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Deva Kumar and Kovvur Revenue Divisional Officer Rani Susmita, are overseeing the search operations.
