With the festive mood in the air, Panaji in Goa celebrated Diwali by burning the effigy of the demon Narakasura. This event took place on Thursday as part of a tradition that honors Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon king, Narakasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and the welcoming of the new lunar year.

In Hindu history, Narakasura is depicted as an Asura king who once ruled the land of Gomantak. His arrogance and tyranny caused great distress among the people. In their plea for help, they turned to Lord Krishna, who fought a fierce battle against Narakasura, ultimately defeating him with his legendary Sudharshan Chakra, restoring peace and happiness to the region.

Throughout India, towns and cities are beautifully adorned for Diwali, with homes decorated in vibrant lights, flowers, and intricate rangoli designs to celebrate this joyful festival.

One local participating in the festivities shared, “We create the effigy of Narakasura for Diwali using wood and grass, a process that takes about 15-20 days. Each area has its unique version. We burn it at 5 o’clock on Narak Chaturthi, which is a cherished tradition for us.” Another resident added, “The celebration of Narakasura is particularly lively in Panaji, and this tradition has been upheld for over 80 years in Goa.”

Diwali is one of the most important festivals in India and globally known as the Festival of Lights, representing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Families prepare for the occasion by decorating their homes with colorful rangoli designs, lighting diyas, and setting up fairy lights.

The festivities generally include prayers to Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity, sharing delightful sweets and snacks, and exchanging gifts with family and friends. The night sky is illuminated by fireworks, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
