New Delhi: The Indian Ministry of Defence has finalized 13 contracts worth Rs 1,981.9 crore under the Emergency Procurement mechanism to enhance the Army’s counter-terror operations. These deals aim to improve operational readiness by acquiring advanced equipment.
Key Equipment Being Procured
The procurement includes Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction Systems, Low-Level Lightweight Radars, Very Short Range Air Defence Systems, and Remotely Piloted Aerial Vehicles. It also covers Loitering Munitions, including Vertical Take-Off and Landing systems, various drones, Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles, night scopes for rifles, bulletproof jackets, and ballistic helmets.
Rapid, Indigenous Capability Enhancement
Executed through fast-track procedures, these contracts were finalized within tight timelines to quickly augment combat capabilities. The total expenditure is close to the sanctioned outlay of Rs 2,000 crore, reflecting the government’s focus on modernizing and indigenous systems for the Army.
Context and Security Challenges
This procurement effort follows the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where Pakistani terrorists killed 26 tourists. Investigations confirmed the terrorists were Pakistani nationals, including a former army paracommando. The incident highlights ongoing security threats, with Pakistan’s military involvement evident through support for terrorist activities and retaliatory actions, such as Indian strikes on 11 of its airbases following drone assaults across the border.
