Ahmedabad: The operations of Regional Transport Offices (RTO) throughout Gujarat were disrupted on Monday as inspectors and sub-inspectors initiated a two-day protest demanding transfers and promotions.

On the first day, employees observed a ‘No Log In Day,’ effectively halting all RTO activities. Consequently, applicants visiting these offices faced significant challenges, although the department attempted to maintain minimal services with a limited number of staff.

The protest not only impacted routine operations but also delayed election-related and road safety initiatives. Sources indicate that a mass casual leave (CL) is planned for Tuesday by the protesting transport department employees.

A spokesperson for the demonstrators stated that the long-standing demands for transfers and promotions among RTO inspectors and sub-inspectors have led to mounting frustration among staff.

This agitation has further complicated matters for the public, who already encounter issues at RTOs due to frequent server malfunctions.

RTOs are crucial for enforcing the Motor Vehicles Act and ensuring the effective regulation of transportation within the state. Their key responsibilities include vehicle registration, issuing and renewing driving licenses, collecting motor vehicle taxes, conducting mechanical inspections to verify vehicle fitness, and granting permits for commercial operations.

Moreover, RTOs implement road safety measures and maintain comprehensive records of registered vehicles and licensed drivers.

As of the end of the 2020 fiscal year, Gujarat had over 26 million registered vehicles, indicating a substantial vehicular population. To manage this, the state is organized into 38 RTOs and ARTOs.
