Chandigarh: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) team from Jind arrested Sonia Aggarwal, the vice-chairperson of the Haryana State Women Commission, along with her personal assistant and driver, Kulbir, on Saturday evening. They were allegedly caught accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to facilitate a settlement in a marital dispute between a couple, according to an official statement.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kamaljeet Singh, and the ACB recovered the bribe amount from Kulbir during the arrest.
The Haryana ACB confirmed the arrests via a social media post, stating: “The team of Haryana Anti-Corruption Bureau today arrested Haryana Women Commission Vice-President Sonia Agarwal and her driver Kulbir on charges of taking a bribe of Rs 1,00000. The ACB team succeeded in catching the accused Kulbir red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 1,00000. Investigation is ongoing in this case. @cmohry #Corruption #vigilance.”
According to reports, Anil, a Junior Basic Teacher from Julana in Jind district, and his wife, who works for the Haryana Police in Bahadurgarh, had been involved in a long-standing dispute. Anil’s wife had filed a complaint with the Haryana State Women Commission, leading to a hearing where both parties appeared before Sonia Aggarwal on December 12.
During this process, Anil was approached by Aggarwal’s PA, who allegedly requested Rs 1 lakh for a settlement. Following this, Anil contacted the ACB, prompting them to register a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The ACB set a trap and apprehended Kulbir while he was receiving the bribe from Anil near a park in Hisar on Saturday. Meanwhile, a separate team searched Sonia Aggarwal’s residence in Pratap Colony, Kharkhoda, but she was not home. The team later summoned her for questioning at the women’s police station in Sonepat, where she was subsequently arrested.
