Mangaluru (Karnataka): Heavy rainfall continues to affect coastal Karnataka, with a girl losing her life in a landslide in Mangaluru. Authorities managed to rescue two individuals, while efforts are ongoing to find and save three others trapped under debris.
The landslide, triggered by relentless rains near Montepadavu in Ullal taluk, buried two houses and resulted in the death of six-year-old Fathima Nayeema. She was rushed to a hospital in Deralakatte but unfortunately passed away. Rescue teams from Fire and Emergency Services are actively working at the site to rescue the remaining trapped victims.
Several areas in Mangaluru have been flooded, notably the Kallapu region, where about 50 houses are under water, prompting authorities to relocate affected families. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rains in the region until June 2.
In response, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools, Anganwadi centers, and colleges, and issued safety advisories urging caution and urging people to avoid the sea. Similar measures are in place in Udupi, with holidays declared for certain educational institutions to ensure safety.
Tourist activities at beaches, rivers, and waterfalls have been banned, and restrictions on recording videos near water bodies have been implemented. Helpline numbers have been circulated for public assistance.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru remains cloudy, with a red alert issued for five districts—Mangaluru, Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan—and an orange alert for other districts until June 2, indicating the severity of the ongoing weather situation.
