Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a forecast predicting heavy rainfall across several districts of Tamil Nadu from March 10 for the next four days.
The districts likely to be affected include Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram.
In response to the forecast, the state government is considering declaring a holiday for schools and colleges in these districts on March 10. Authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions and stay indoors during the heavy rain, with officials monitoring the situation closely and providing updates.
While some parts of the state are preparing for the downpour, other areas, including Chennai, are experiencing intense heat. The RMC has also warned that temperatures in certain regions may rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
Tamil Nadu received 14% more rainfall than usual during the northeast monsoon season, recording 447 mm against the average of 393 mm. Chennai saw 845 mm of rainfall, 16% above average, while Coimbatore recorded a significant 47% increase in rainfall.
The state had previously faced severe damage from Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall between November 29 and December 1 last year. The cyclone caused extensive damage, claiming 12 lives, flooding over 211,000 hectares of agricultural land, and severely affecting infrastructure.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting Rs 2,000 crore in interim relief from the National Disaster Response Fund. The central government later sanctioned Rs 944 crore to aid the affected regions.
As Tamil Nadu braces for more heavy rain, authorities remain on high alert to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety.
