Mizoram : The effect of the Ramal storm that hit West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday (May 26) was seen in the North-East on Tuesday (May 28). 27 people died in Mizoram due to continuous rain and landslide. Of these, 14 people died due to the collapse of a stone mine in Aizawl. Two children are also among the dead. About 8 people are missing.
Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds also occurred in Assam. 4 people, including a woman, died in different incidents. 18 were injured. Four people died in Nagaland and more than 40 houses were destroyed. Two people died and more than 500 were injured due to heavy rains in Meghalaya.
Rescue operation continued till night, two people were pulled out alive from the debris
Mizoram DGP Anil Shukla told news agency PTI that the stone quarry between Meltham and Hlimen on the southern outskirts of Aizawl city was closed for the last three decades. There were many houses and worker camps here. A landslide occurred here at 6 am on Tuesday, due to which about 22 people were buried under the debris.
The bodies of 14 people have been recovered. These include a four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl. Rescue operations continued overnight to search for 8 missing people. During this, two people buried under the debris were pulled out alive.
Rain expected in Mizoram today too
IMD has predicted rain in most parts of Mizoram on Wednesday (May 29). During this time, strong winds at a speed of 30-40 kmph, thunderstorms and lightning are likely to blow.
There is a heavy rain alert in West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim till May 30. Assam and Meghalaya may receive very heavy rainfall on 29 and 30 May.
CM announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh
Chief Minister Lalduhoma has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives in rain-related accidents. The state government has ordered all government and private offices to remain closed on Wednesday (May 29) following the weather department’s warning.
All schools and government offices in the state were closed on Tuesday. Government offices were closed. Private companies were asked to get their employees to work from home.
