The Southwest monsoon, which had paused for nearly two weeks after its early start earlier this year, is set to become active again from Thursday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in parts of south peninsular India from June 12-15, with isolated places experiencing extremely heavy rainfall on June 13 and 14. The IMD also forecast that heatwave conditions are expected to persist over Northwest India, with severe heatwaves in some pockets of West Rajasthan until Thursday, after which they are likely to subside.

Kerala saw the arrival of the southwest monsoon on May 24, a week earlier than usual, marking its earliest onset on the Indian mainland since 2009. May 2025 was recorded as India’s wettest since 1901, with an average rainfall of 126.7 mm, driven by the early monsoon and continuous rainfall across southern and eastern regions. The monsoon, which initially arrived early, had stalled around May 29 but is expected to resume active conditions from Thursday, as per official forecasts.

Additionally, the IMD has issued a seven-day warning for Karnataka, predicting widespread rainfall across most districts until June 17. Torrential rain in Hubballi, Dharwad district, early Thursday caused severe waterlogging, especially in Hanashi village. The weather agency stated that rainfall would continue to prevail widely in coastal and northern interior Karnataka until June 17, while the south interior districts will experience fairly widespread rain until June 14 before becoming widespread over the next few days.
