Jalandhar, July 22: Dementia is a mental condition in which a person’s memory, thinking ability, behaviour, and ability to perform daily tasks gradually begin to decline. It is usually more likely to occur in old age, but it is not normal ageing.
1. Brain cell damage
When brain cells begin to die or do not function properly, dementia can occur.
For example, Alzheimer’s disease, in which some abnormal proteins accumulate in the brain that damaging the memory area.
2. Reduced blood supply to the brain
If the blood supply to the brain is reduced (such as due to a stroke or small strokes), vascular dementia can occur.
3. Decrease in brain chemicals
As we age, neurotransmitters (chemicals that send messages to the brain) decrease. This hinders memory and recall.
4. Brain shrinkage (atrophy)
The brain naturally shrinks in old age, especially the hippocampus, which is responsible for forming new memories.
5. Long-term diseases
Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, etc. increase the risk of dementia, as they prevent the brain from getting oxygen or nutrients.
Why do the elderly forget things?
Some natural changes in memory occur with age:
