New Delhi: The Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 was introduced in the Lok Sabha today, provoking significant opposition from Muslim organizations.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has expressed its strong disapproval of the bill, with key leaders threatening legal action and a nationwide movement if it is passed. AIMPLB spokesperson Dr. Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas criticized the bill, stating, “If this bill is passed in Parliament, we will initiate a nationwide movement against it. We will not remain silent. We will utilize all legal and constitutional measures available to us and conduct a peaceful agitation until the proposed amendments are withdrawn.”
Ilyas called the bill discriminatory and communally motivated, lamenting that the concerns raised by opposition members were disregarded by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). This controversy arises from worries that the bill could adversely affect the management and autonomy of Waqf properties, which are intended for the benefit of the Muslim community. He further argued that the bill represents an infringement on the rights of Muslims and fails to address the community’s concerns adequately.
Maulana Mohammed Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, General Secretary of the AIMPLB, also voiced objections, asserting that the amendments approved by the JPC have complicated the issue further. He referred to the JPC as “just a hoax and a fraud.”
In contrast, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the Waqf Amendment Bill introduced in the Lok Sabha today is for the country’s benefit. He claimed that the opposition to the bill is politically motivated and argued that logical concerns could be addressed. Speaking to the media, Rijiju emphasized, “Today is a historic day as the Waqf Amendment Bill is being introduced in Lok Sabha, which benefits not only crores of Muslims but the entire nation. Those opposing it are doing so for political reasons. I will present facts in the House and hope that any opposition is grounded in logic, to which we can respond.”
He added that the bill has been carefully considered and prepared prior to its introduction.
