Himachal Pradesh: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, set for July 6. The alert specifically targets districts such as Kangra, Sirmaur, and Mandi, amid concerns due to the challenging weather conditions experienced in the past week, which have included heavy rains and several cloudbursts. These events have resulted in at least 69 fatalities and left 37 people missing in the hill state.
The Red Alert has been issued in anticipation of the peak monsoon activity expected on July 6 and 7. Additionally, an Orange Alert has been issued for districts including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Solan, Shimla, and Kullu. Authorities and residents in these areas have been advised to stay alert and prepared for worsening conditions.
The IMD’s Shimla center indicated earlier on Friday that the state could witness intense rainfall from Saturday through Wednesday (July 5 to 9). In the past 24 hours, some isolated locations experienced heavy rainfall, with Aghar recording the highest at 7 cm. Other areas such as Sarahan and Shimla received 4 cm each, while Nagrota Surian and Karsog reported 3 cm. Mandi saw 2 cm of rain, and Berthin, Baijnath, Dharamshala, and Jogindarnagar each received 1 cm.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted that the most significant destruction has occurred in the Seraj and Dharampur areas of Mandi district, where cloudbursts have caused extensive damage to homes, farmland, and infrastructure. The disaster has injured at least 110 individuals so far.
In a relief effort, the Himachal Pradesh government announced that families whose homes have been destroyed or are now uninhabitable will be given Rs 5,000 a month in rent if they are residing in rented accommodations, aiming to support those affected by the calamity.
