New Delhi: India condemned the security breach by pro-Khalistani supporters during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to the UK. The incident occurred on Wednesday when pro-Khalistani demonstrators staged a protest outside Chatham House in London while Jaishankar was engaged in talks. The protestors carried flags and raised slogans, and the incident quickly went viral on social media.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement condemning the misuse of democratic freedoms by such elements.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Jaishankar met with UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to discuss key issues, including talent mobility, efforts to combat trafficking, and extremism. He also held extensive talks with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy at Chevening House, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties, including strategic coordination, trade, education, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. Jaishankar also met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, discussing regional and global issues such as the Ukraine conflict, West Asia, Bangladesh, and the Commonwealth.
Jaishankar emphasized the importance of India-UK relations in contributing to global stability and prosperity. He further stated that they had agreed to take steps to enhance bilateral cooperation.
This protest was not the first of its kind in London. In January, pro-Khalistan extremists had interrupted a screening of the movie Emergency in Harrow. India has repeatedly raised concerns with the UK government about such violent protests and intimidation by anti-India groups. Jaishankar’s UK visit, which began on Tuesday, is scheduled to conclude on Sunday.
