New Delhi: In a move demonstrating solidarity and support for the Global South, India has sent a shipment of 300,000 doses of Measles and Rubella vaccines, along with related supplies, to Bolivia to assist in controlling a recent disease outbreak. Bolivia declared a National Health Emergency last month due to a measles surge.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on X that the consignment was dispatched to bolster Bolivia’s efforts in managing the outbreak. As of July 14, Bolivia’s Ministry of Health and Sports confirmed 119 cases of measles, with the majority—98 cases—reported in Santa Cruz. Other affected regions include La Paz with 10 cases, Potosi with 4, Beni with 3, Chuquisaca with 2, and one case each in Oruro and Pando.

This vaccine delivery follows a recent discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora at the BRICS Summit in Brazil, where both leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation and expressed satisfaction with ongoing progress. Their talks covered areas such as critical minerals, trade, digital infrastructure, health, pharmaceuticals, traditional medicine, small and medium enterprises, and capacity building.

India and Bolivia share warm and friendly relations, with promising avenues for increased trade, investment, and cooperation across various sectors, including minerals, infrastructure, healthcare, IT, and development initiatives. India has a history of supporting Bolivia’s healthcare efforts, having previously provided medical aid in August 2020, including 6.2 tonnes of essential medicines, 300,000 Hydroxychloroquine tablets, and protective gear.
