New Delhi: An Indian Army contingent, consisting of troops from the elite Parachute Regiment, has departed for Kyrgyzstan to participate in the 12th edition of the India-Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise “Khanjar.” The exercise, set to take place from March 10 to March 23, aims to address shared concerns about international terrorism and enhance defense cooperation between the two countries.
The joint exercise provides a platform for both nations to strengthen defense ties while tackling issues related to terrorism and extremism. It also reinforces their commitment to peace, stability, and security in the region. Since its inception in 2011, Khanjar has become an annual event, with venues alternating between India and Kyrgyzstan. The last edition was held in India in January 2024.
The Indian contingent is represented by troops from the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), while Kyrgyzstan’s Scorpion Brigade will participate from their side. The exercise will focus on exchanging expertise in counter-terrorism and special forces operations, particularly in urban and mountainous high-altitude scenarios. It will also include training in advanced skills such as sniping, complex building intervention, and mountain operations.
In addition to the training, the exercise will include cultural exchanges, with the celebration of the Central Asian festival of Nowruz, further strengthening the bond between the two nations.
Earlier, in February 2025, the Indian military conducted the ‘Desert Hunt 2025’ exercise at the Air Force Station Jodhpur. This tri-service drill brought together the elite Para (Special Forces), the Navy’s Marine Commandos, and the IAF’s Garud (Special Forces) to enhance interoperability and coordination in addressing emerging security challenges.
