IndiGo flight suffers tail strike at Mumbai Airport amid heavy rain; Probe ordered

Mumbai: A Bangkok–Mumbai IndiGo flight suffered a tail strike while attempting to land at Mumbai airport in the early hours of Saturday amid heavy rainfall, prompting the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to order a detailed investigation.

According to officials, flight 6E 1060, an Airbus A321 Neo, struck its tail on runway 27 at 3:06 am during a low-altitude go-around in adverse weather conditions. The aircraft later carried out a safe landing on a subsequent attempt. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

The incident comes at a time when Mumbai has been witnessing continuous downpours that forced at least 14 go-arounds and three diversions between Friday night and Saturday morning.

IndiGo confirmed the incident, stating, “On August 16, 2025, an Airbus A321 aircraft tail touched the runway while executing a low-altitude go-around due to unfavourable weather conditions. The aircraft landed safely thereafter and will undergo necessary checks and regulatory clearance before resuming operations.”

Officials said the aircraft was later grounded, and the airline has been asked to submit a detailed report. However, it was noted that neither the airline nor the crew reported the incident to the Air Traffic Control (ATC).

A DGCA official said, “We will be undertaking an investigation. A formal order will be issued shortly.”

Airport authorities added that the tail strike did not cause structural damage to the aircraft, but the runway surface was scraped. Aviation experts note that the A321, due to its length, is prone to tail strikes in turbulent weather globally.

The DGCA has already been scrutinising IndiGo over pilot training and safety compliance, with this incident likely to come under close regulatory review.
