Akhnoor (Jammu and Kashmir): The water level in the Chenab River at Akhnoor has sharply decreased after gates at the Baglihar and Salal Dams were closed. Local residents have shown support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, attributing the decline in water flow to this move.

One local, speaking to ANI, emphasized that they do not want even a single drop of water to flow to Pakistan and expressed backing for the Indian Army and Modi’s government.

Kalyan Singh, another resident, noted the dramatic reduction in water levels, saying, “The river used to flow at 25-30 feet but now has only 1.5-2 feet of water. This is due to PM Modi’s decision to halt the treaty. We stand with the Indian Army and support Prime Minister Modi.”

Another local, with 75 years of life experience, expressed shock at seeing such a low water level—remarking that he had never witnessed such a drastic change, with the river barely having 1-1.5 feet of water. He also voiced gratitude towards Modi for the move and reiterated support for the military.

This reaction comes in the wake of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 deaths, mostly tourists. The Indian government responded by suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, among other measures. It also declared diplomats at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi persona non grata and instructed them to leave within a week.

The government reaffirmed its determination to combat terrorism decisively, stressing that those involved in recent attacks and conspiracy would face severe consequences.
