The Meteorological Department has predicted cold, dry weather until December 20, with expectations of an intensifying cold wave during this period.

The morning chill and frost have hampered pedestrian and vehicle movement in Srinagar and surrounding towns, prompting many to stay indoors to escape the severe cold. In the evenings, shops and businesses close earlier as people rush home to spend time with their families during the long, frigid nights.

During the winter months, most Kashmiris don the traditional tweed garment known as the ‘Pheran.’ To keep warm, they use a willow wicker firepot called the ‘Kangri,’ filled with embers and placed under the Pheran.

Despite claims of improved services, the local administration has struggled to provide adequate electricity to residents in the Valley, even as revenue collection has increased. This situation has led locals to rely on traditional methods to combat the winter chill and continue wearing time-honored attire.
