Jammu-Srinagar National Highway shut due to snow, landslides; vehicles halted at Jakhani

Udhampur: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been closed due to snow accumulation between Ramsoo and Qazigund, along with shooting stones, landslides, and mudslides between Nashri and the NAVYUG Tunnel, according to officials on Friday. A large number of vehicles, including trucks, passenger cars, and buses, are stranded at Jakhani in Udhampur, as Traffic Police have.

A large number of vehicles, including trucks, passenger cars, and buses, are stranded at Jakhani in Udhampur, as Traffic Police have barred any vehicles from proceeding past Jakhani due to the highway closure.

In other news, Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is experiencing a fresh spell of rain, while heavy snowfall has been reported in the Doda and Bhalesa districts. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working on snow clearance at the Srinagar airport runway following recent snowfall. The region has faced continuous rain and snow for the past 36 hours, resulting in a significant drop in temperature.

Interestingly, farmers in the area are pleased with the snowfall, which is a rare event. While previous snowfalls raised concerns about potential financial losses for farmers and orchardists, this current spell seems to be advantageous for them. Lahaul and Spiti are also under a thick layer of snow, receiving another round of heavy snowfall. Additionally, Lahaul and Spiti Police issued an avalanche alert for the region on February 28.

From February 26 to 28, Jammu and Kashmir issued an orange alert for four districts in Himachal Pradesh: Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, which may experience heavy rain and snowfall. The regions of Jammu, Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh are facing continuous snowfall and rain, with Udhampur district experiencing uninterrupted rainfall for the last two days, a situation expected to persist until February 28.
