Surat: A jewellery shop owner was killed and another person injured during an attempted armed robbery at a showroom in Surat’s Sachin area on Monday night, police officials said.
During the incident, four armed suspects entered the jewelry store around 8:40 PM, threatening staff and customers at gunpoint with the intention of stealing valuables.
While attempting to flee the scene, one of the robbers was stopped by local residents and turned over to the police. The other three assailants managed to escape. In the ensuing chaos, Ashish Bhai, one of the shop owners, tried to intervene but was shot twice by the robbers. He was quickly taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The robbers also opened fire on a crowd that had gathered outside the shop in an effort to prevent their escape. One individual, Nazim Sheikh, was injured by the gunfire and is currently receiving treatment. During the turmoil, locals managed to apprehend one of the suspects, identified as Deepak Paswan, who was beaten by the crowd before being handed over to authorities.
Police have launched a search for the remaining three suspects, deploying multiple teams from the Surat Crime Branch, Special Operations Group, and local police stations to locate them. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering forensic evidence to assist their probe, with assurances from officials that the other culprits will be caught soon.
