New Delhi: A heartbreaking fire broke out in a house in the Shiv Nagar area of Kathua city early Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, including two young children.

Doctors at GMC Hospital in Kathua reported that the victims died from suffocation due to smoke inhalation. The fire erupted around 2:21 A.M., prompting a swift response from emergency services, with fire department personnel and police arriving quickly. Unfortunately, all six victims were pronounced dead upon reaching the hospital.

The incident took place in a rented home where the victims lived. Dr. Surinder Atri from GMC Hospital described the situation as extremely tragic, noting that those who perished included the husband of a retired Assistant Matron, their unmarried daughter, and two children from her brother’s family. Fortunately, other family members, including another daughter and a son, as well as the rest of the brother’s family, are safe.

Initial investigations indicate that the fire may have been sparked by a burning lamp or stove, which ignited nearby furniture and belongings. The flames spread rapidly, filling the room with dense smoke, which caused panic and led to fatalities from suffocation rather than burns, as the victims showed no significant burn injuries.

Dr. Atri emphasized the profound loss for the family, highlighting that the victims were all sleeping in one room when the fire started. The retired Assistant Matron’s husband, her unmarried daughter, and her brother’s two children are among those who died, leaving a significant void in the family. Authorities are currently looking into the cause of the fire to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
