Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed governments of Punjab, Haryana as well as authorities of UT Chandigarh to file a compliance report in terms of the directions passed by the apex court on court security.
After a firing incident reported in Chandigarh court complex on August 3 wherein a retired Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the Punjab Police shot dead his son-in-law, an Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer within Chandigarh district court complex, the advocates have expressed concern over security arrangements in the court complexes.
Following which, a writ petition concerning security measures in judicial court complexes across the region was filed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The petition, which highlights the need for enhanced security in all District and Sub-Divisional court complexes, including tribunals, was brought before the court seeking urgent attention to the matter.
After placing the notice of motion, notices were accepted on behalf of the concerned states and Union Territory. Anurag Chopra, Additional Advocate General of Punjab, represented the State of Punjab, while Deepak Balyan, Additional Advocate General of Haryana, appeared on behalf of the State of Haryana. Sumeet Jain, Additional Standing Counsel, accepted the notice on behalf of U.T. Chandigarh.
The High Court has mandated that the respondents submit their compliance report, detailing the measures taken or proposed to be taken to ensure the safety and security of the court premises.
“The respondents to file their compliance report specially in terms of the directions passed by the Apex Court in “Pradyuman Bisht Vs. Union of India and others”, Writ Petition (Crl.) No. 99/2015,” read the court orders.
The matter is next listed for hearing on September 9.
